What is the Most Trusted Diamond Certification?

Independent labs grade diamonds and issue certificates to prove their grading. Some laboratories are strict and consistent, whilst others are lax and inconsistent. Above all, ensure you're paying the correct price for the diamond's quality. When you buy something as valuable as a diamond, you want to know that the quality matches the price. GIA-certified diamonds (also known as a diamond grading report) provide written evidence of a diamond's characteristics and an index of the diamond's fair market value. AGS-certified diamonds also allow you to compare diamonds intelligently in the same jewellery store or another.

Let's have a look at a few more things about diamond certification.

1 – What is Diamond Certification

Certified loose diamonds are a process in which an independent gem lab (not affiliated with the jeweller!) checks and evaluates the quality of a diamond. The lab then gives a written report on the diamond. Each report, or "certificate," has a unique number maintained on file at the gem lab, and a copy is returned with the diamond. In addition, many certified diamonds include a microscopic laser inscription of their certification number on the diamond's outer border (its "girdle"). It is useful if a diamond certificate is ever lost or stolen.

2 - A Diamond Certificate Contains the Four Cs:

  • Diamond Color - A sliding scale ranging from D (colourless diamond) to Z (colourless diamond) (noticeable yellow).
  • Diamond Cut - The cut grade of a diamond influences the stone's apparent shine (do not mix cut with the diamond shape).
  • Diamond Clarity - A sliding scale ranging from FL (Flawless) to I3 (Included) measures the severity of the minor flaws found in many diamonds.
  • Diamond Carat - Carat is a term used to describe the weight of a diamond.

3 – Top Trusted Diamond Certification

Keep your letters straight. There are hundreds and dozens of gem labs. Some gem labs are self-contained, while others work with jewellers. Some, such GIA certified diamonds and AGS-certified diamonds, have tight grading procedures and adhere to strong professional ethics. Others, who grade a huge number of gems rapidly and cheaply, are less stringent.

A - GIA

You want to get your money's worth. And you're curious about what you've got! The GIA performs the most stringent diamond certification available. So, there is no doubt that the Certified loose diamonds on your certificate represent the true quality of your stone. There is no hedging and hawing. It will no longer be necessary to argue that "it's just as excellent as..." Choosing a diamond with a GIA certificate ensures that you have independent, unbiased proof of the quality of your diamond from the standard gold lab.

B – AGS

AGS is another excellent option for diamond certification. AGS follows tight criteria and is well-known in the jewellery industry. Most jewellers compliment their cut grading system. However, their colour and clarity grading scale differs from that of GIA, with AGS employing a system of integers and decimals rather than GIA's normal D-Z colour and FL-I3 clarity scale. Thus, these scales are less widely acknowledged than GIA's. Although this approach is realistic, some individuals find it puzzling.

To Sign Off

Certified loose diamonds' prices and values are not comparable across certifications because diamond certificates are not created equal. Make sure you buy a diamond with a certificate from a reputable grading entity and thoroughly inspect it before you buy it. Because consistency, dependability, and integrity matter, we suggest GIA and AGS grading only for diamonds with these certifications.
